Julian Assange says he was only released after pleading guilty to ‘the crime of journalism.’ In an address to the Legal Affairs and Human Rights Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, the whistleblower detailed a campaign of reprisal by former CIA director Mike Pompeo over Wikileaks’ embarrassing revelations.
His real ‘crime,’ many would argue, was simply lifting the lid on US wrongdoings – by publishing a trove of diplomatic cables that implicate Washington in atrocities and alleged war crimes. Many of these relate directly to Africa.
