The ending of slavery or colonial rule is often presented in history books as some kind of act of kindness by enlightened, morally upright imperialists. But we know that’s false. Had our people not fought tooth and nail for liberation, our independence – although still incomplete – would not have been possible.
The struggle goes on and we too must fight for our freedom. As pan-African revolutionary and first president of Ghana Kwame Nkrumah (1909-72) said, it’s never a given.
