South Africa’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party has condemned what it describes as ‘state repression’ in Mozambique following security forces reportedly k*lling 20 protesters, injuring 390 and detaining 880 following protests over a disputed election. Meanwhile, the Mozambican opposition party, Optimist Party for the Development of Mozambique (PODEMOS), has called for mass demonstrations on 7 November in the capital of Maputo.
EFF also called for an investigation into an alleged assassination attempt on PODEMOS candidate Venancio Mondlane, exiled in South Africa. EFF demanded ‘urgent action’ from the African Union, Southern African Development Community and global human-rights bodies.
Mozambicans poured into the streets after Mondlane called for protests over allegedly fraudulent elections on 9 October. Independence-era party FRELIMO clinched the presidency with 71 per cent of votes.
The Mozambican government has warned that it may deploy the military to control the growing unrest. Authorities have already restricted internet access, and police are reportedly invading homes and indiscriminately firing tear gas.
