Ghana’s First Female Vice Prez

Ghana’s getting its first female vice-president: Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, who was president-elect John Mahama’s running mate in the country’s Dec 7 election. It’s seen as a win for a more inclusive political landscape. According to the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, women’s representation in Africa’s parliaments stood at 26% in 2024 – a slight increase from 25% in 2021. This low share has primarily been attributed to a lack of political will, restrictive electoral systems and deeply entrenched patriarchal norms.
