Ghana’s set for a golden age with the launch of its first refinery in the capital, Accra. The Royal Ghana Gold Refinery will process 400kg of the precious metal a day. With prices topping $2,238 an ounce in the second quarter of 2024, the West African state is set for a windfall.
Until now, Ghana’s been exporting only unprocessed gold, but still managed to rake in $5 billion in the first half of 2024 alone. The London Bullion Market Association has issued a Good Delivery Bar Certification for the new refinery. Maybe Ghana should revert to its former name, The Gold Coast… or is that too tarnished by the colonial past?
