Slavery still exists in the US… in its prison-industrial complex, where inmates are forced to work for next-to-nothing in tough conditions, providing essentially free labour for the state. Making the historical parallel even closer is the fact that some of the biggest ‘penal farms’ are on ex-slave plantations. Here, we take a closer look at one in Louisiana called Angola – named after the African country. (And yes, thanks to racist policing, most of the inmates are Black.)
