The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Chad continue to deny claims that they are playing a role in exacerbating the war in Sudan despite foreign dignitaries’ accusations and a New York Times investigative report detailing how the UAE has covertly been arming Sudanese paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) through the Chadian border by disguising weapons as aid.
The 18-month war between the Sudanese military and the RSF began on 15 April 2023, leaving more than 12 million people internally and externally displaced as of June, according to the International Organisation for Migration, and k*lling as many as 150,000 by May, according to the US envoy.
Many have described it as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, with the UN recently warning that 13 million are at risk of ‘acute hunger’ and more than half of Sudan’s 49-million people require humanitarian assistance.
