Descendants of the Herero and Nama people are demanding the return of ancestral lands Germany stole during what historians consider the 20th century’s first genocide. Between 1904 and 1908, colonial authorities in Namibia killed between 34,000 to 100,000 Herero and Nama people, according to some estimates. Despite Germany issuing an apology in 2021, descendants say few practical steps have been taken to address some of the enduring injustices. For example, Namibia’s white people—making up only about five per cent of the population, with some being descendants of the genociders in question—own more than 70 per cent of farmland.
